People Are People

I was asked to design the set and costume for a devised show called 'People Are People', a devised show by Floods of Ink. The play explores gender identity and the idea of young adults feeling trapped in the body they were born in, and is set in a future where the character portrayed must visit a 'Normalisation Clinic' to register their gender with a Siri-esque computer programme. I was involved in the devising of the show as well as both making and sourcing various costumes and props which I had designed for the show. The project was a new designing experience for me as it was completely devised during the rehearsal process. This meant that I was involved with the entire process from start to finish, pitching in with ideas for the script and direction as well as the design.

People Are People is due to visit different theatres around the UK and therefore the design had to be durable and movable enough for a full tour. The show involves a mix of live acting, projection and shadow work and therefore the set had to reflect the need for that, with a minimal but effective set of movable screens and props.

  • Creating a durable set able to withstand tours around different theatres

  • Attending rehearsals and adapting the design to specification

  • Sourcing and adapting props and costumes

  • Design and build of the set

  • Meeting with the director and producer to create a great finished result
